4.2 Fake Payment Screenshot Scams

A deep dive into how fake payment screenshot scams work and exactly how to identify and avoid them.

§How This Scam Works

The scammer initiates a buy trade on the platform, which locks the seller's crypto in escrow. Instead of making the actual payment, the scammer creates a fake screenshot that resembles a successful UPI or bank transfer confirmation.

The scammer then sends this screenshot through the platform chat and marks the payment as completed. They may add urgency by saying they need the USDT quickly for an important transaction or that the payment might take a few minutes to reflect.

The goal is to convince the seller to release escrow based on the visual proof before verifying the actual bank credit. Once the seller releases escrow, the crypto is transferred to the scammer's wallet irreversibly.

§How to Identify Fake Screenshots

While fake screenshots can be sophisticated, there are often telltale signs. Look for inconsistencies in font sizes, alignment, or spacing compared to genuine payment confirmations. Differences in colour gradients or image quality can also indicate manipulation.

Check whether the date, time, and transaction amount on the screenshot match the trade details. Scammers sometimes reuse old screenshots or screenshots from different transactions.

However, do not rely on visual analysis alone. Even a perfect-looking screenshot means nothing if the money has not arrived in your bank account. The only reliable verification is checking your actual bank balance.

§How to Protect Yourself

The protection against fake payment screenshots is straightforward: always check your bank account directly. Open your banking app or log into your net banking portal and verify that the payment has been credited.

Wait for the payment to fully settle before releasing escrow. Some payment methods show pending transactions that may not actually complete. Only release escrow when the funds are fully available in your account.

If the buyer sends a screenshot but the payment is not in your account after a reasonable time (10 to 15 minutes for UPI, longer for bank transfers), communicate through the platform chat. If the situation is not resolved, raise a dispute.

Never let urgency or social pressure override your verification process. A legitimate buyer will understand the need to verify payments.
