10.4 Understanding Transaction Hashes

What transaction hashes are, how to read them, and how to use them to verify crypto transfers.

§What Is a Transaction Hash?

A transaction hash (also called a transaction ID or TXID) is a unique identifier assigned to every transaction on a blockchain. It is a long string of letters and numbers that serves as a receipt for your transaction.

Every blockchain transaction, whether it is sending USDT, paying gas fees, or interacting with a smart contract, generates a unique transaction hash. No two transactions can have the same hash.

On Tron, transaction hashes look like a long string of alphanumeric characters. On Polygon and BNB Chain, they start with 0x followed by a 64-character hexadecimal string.

§How to Use Transaction Hashes

Transaction hashes are your proof that a blockchain transaction occurred. After sending USDT, your wallet provides the transaction hash. You can share this hash with the recipient so they can verify the transfer independently.

To look up a transaction, copy the hash and paste it into the appropriate block explorer. For Tron, use Tronscan. For Polygon, use Polygonscan. For BNB Chain, use BscScan.

The block explorer shows the complete transaction details including the sender address, recipient address, amount transferred, network fee paid, timestamp, and confirmation status.

§Verifying Transactions

When verifying a transaction using its hash, check several details. Confirm that the recipient address matches the intended destination. Verify that the amount matches what was supposed to be sent. Check the status to ensure the transaction is confirmed, not pending or failed.

If someone provides you with a transaction hash as proof of payment, verify it on the block explorer yourself. Do not trust screenshots of block explorer pages, as these can be fabricated.

Keep transaction hashes for all significant transfers as part of your personal records. They serve as permanent, verifiable proof that a transaction occurred.
