10.2 What Is a Crypto Wallet?

Understanding crypto wallets, how they work, and why you need one for P2P trading.

§What Is a Crypto Wallet?

A crypto wallet is a tool that allows you to store, send, and receive cryptocurrency. Despite the name, a wallet does not actually store your crypto. Your tokens exist on the blockchain. The wallet stores the private keys that give you access to your tokens on the blockchain.

Think of it like your bank account. Your money exists in the bank's system, and your banking app gives you access to it. Similarly, your crypto exists on the blockchain, and your wallet gives you access to it through your private keys.

Wallets can be software applications (on your phone or computer) or hardware devices (physical devices designed specifically for storing private keys securely).

§Types of Wallets

Software wallets (also called hot wallets) are applications installed on your phone or computer. Examples include MetaMask, Trust Wallet, and TronLink. These are convenient for frequent trading because they are always accessible.

Hardware wallets (also called cold wallets) are physical devices like Ledger and Trezor. They store your private keys offline, making them much more resistant to hacking. Hardware wallets are recommended for storing large amounts of cryptocurrency that you do not need to access frequently.

Exchange wallets are wallets provided by cryptocurrency exchanges and platforms. When you hold USDT on CryptoBazaar, it is in the platform's custodial wallet. These are convenient but involve trusting the platform with your keys.

§Wallet Security

Your wallet's security depends primarily on protecting your private key and seed phrase. The seed phrase (also called a recovery phrase) is a series of 12 or 24 words generated when you create a new wallet. This phrase can be used to recover your wallet on any device.

Never share your seed phrase or private keys with anyone. Anyone who has your seed phrase has complete access to your wallet and can take all your funds. CryptoBazaar will never ask for your seed phrase.

Store your seed phrase in a secure physical location, not digitally. Writing it on paper and keeping it in a safe place is more secure than storing it in a file on your computer or phone, which could be compromised by malware.
